Case Summary:
Kayden was playing a bard and was under siege. Once the BBEG was nearing the castle and within hearing range, Kayden shouted down an impassioned speech about why the BBEG should not destroy the castle. Kayden then proceeded to roll a Persuasion check "without waiting for [their] DM to respond" and rolled a Natural 20. However, the DM informed Kayden that he never called for a roll because the BBEG was set in his ways and could not be persuaded. The DM indicated that he would have informed Kayden of this if given the opportunity. Kayden contends that his Natural 20 should overrule and that his combined 32 should persuade the BBEG, regardless of what the DM had decided previously.
Verdict:
The entire bench found this case astonishing. Justice Axford collected herself enough to inform Kayden that they were right for their passion and Justice Hurwitz agreed. However, all justices agreed whole heartedly that you must wait for the roll to be called. Justice Oyama aptly questions what Kayden would have done had they rolled a Natural 1.
Sentence:
Kayden must ask their DM for permission on all rolls and general life decisions (i.e. "may I order a burrito" via text). Additionally, they must roll all persuasion checks with disadvantage for one (1) month.
