In Favor of Plaintiff.
Case Summary:
David was playing a bard and had just reached Level 3. As such they had now gained a second-level spell. Later, while speaking to a person they suspected of being an evil cult member, David used their only second-level spell to cast Detect Thoughts and asked this person about the cult. The DM responded by saying they heard: "I'm hungry. I think it's time for lunch." It later turned out that this person was indeed a member of the cult.
Verdict:
Justice Axford rules strongly on the side of the player and commends the use of Detect Thoughts. Justice Murph suggests that this DM panicked and should have simply adapted in another way. Justice Wilson states that this is yet another case of a DM overreaching and putting a big hand on the story.
Sentence:
The DM is sentenced to attend Hurricane Harbor at noon, but is not allowed to eat lunch. They must have Detect Thoughts cast on everyone there and listen to everyone's inner monologues, which will mostly be focused on lunch.
